Does Tito Oritz really want a piece of Jon Jones? | Photo: Sherdog.com

A 1-7-1 slide leading up to his retirement has done nothing to shake the confidence of Tito Ortiz.

After Jon Jones dismantled Chael Sonnen and equaled Ortiz’s benchmark with a fifth consecutive defense of the Ultimate Fighting Championship light heavyweight crown at UFC 159 on April 27 in Newark, N.J., “The Huntington Beach Bad Boy” did his talking via Twitter. The 38-year-old threw out the idea of ending his retirement to face Jones and protect his record.

Ortiz’s best days are long since passed. He last appeared at UFC 148 in July, when he dropped a unanimous decision to Forrest Griffin in his rubber match with “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 1 winner. In fact, Ortiz has not won back-to-back bouts since he defeated a shopworn Ken Shamrock twice in the span of three months back in 2006.

Jones, meanwhile, appears to have no equal at 205 pounds. The 25-year-old Jackson’s Mixed Martial Arts representative has rattled off nine consecutive victories, defeating Brandon Vera, Vladimir Matyushenko, Ryan Bader, Lyoto Machida, Quinton Jackson, Mauricio “Shogun” Rua, Rashad Evans and the aforementioned Sonnen during his current tear. Perhaps there was some tongue-in-cheek humor in Ortiz’s tweet regarding “Bones.”
