The Ultimate Fighting Championship will hitch its wagon to two of its premier welterweights when Colby Covington meets Jorge Masvidal in the UFC 272 main event on Saturday at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. They once trained together at American Top Team—a reality that pours additional fuel on their fire.

Perhaps the sport’s preeminent lightning rod, Covington has won eight of his past 10 bouts. The MMA Masters export last appeared at UFC 268, where he wound up on the wrong side of a unanimous decision in his Nov. 6 rematch with reigning welterweight champion Kamaru Usman. Masvidal, meanwhile, finds himself on a two-fight losing streak. “Gamebred” last competed on April 24, when he was on the receiving end of a brutal knockout from Usman in the UFC 261 headliner.

As UFC 272 “Covington vs. Masvidal” approaches, a look at some of the numbers the fighters on the card have brought with them:

1,645: Total strikes landed by Covington as a UFC welterweight, placing him sixth on the promotion’s all-time list at 170 pounds. Only Georges St. Pierre (2,523), the aforementioned Usman (2,067), Jon Fitch (2,039), Neil Magny (2,020) and Carlos Condit (1,787) have connected with more.

300,000: Dollars in post-fight bonuses banked by Masvidal across his 20 appearances inside the Octagon. He has been awarded “Performance of the Night” on four occasions and “Fight of the Night” twice.

37: Years of age for Rafael dos Anjos. The oldest fighter on the card, he was born on Oct. 26, 1984 in Niteroi, Brazil. Dos Anjos squares off with Renato Carneiro in the three-round co-main event, set to be contested at a catchweight of 160 pounds.

9: Carneiro victories by submission, accounting for 56% of his career total (16). All nine have come from rear-naked chokes.

7: First-round finishes on the Edson Barboza resume, though only two of them have taken place under the Ultimate Fighting Championship banner. The former Ring of Combat champion put away Lucas Martins in 2:38 at UFC on FX 7 on Jan. 19, 2013 and took care of Evan Dunham in 3:06 at UFC Fight Night 45 on July 16, 2014. Barboza draws the unbeaten Bryce Mitchell in a three-round featherweight showcase.

62: Seconds needed for Mitchell to submit Jorge Medina at World Series of Fighting 27 in January 2016. Having occurred more than six years ago, it remains the fastest finish of the Arkansas native’s 14-fight career.

12: Kevin Holland wins by knockout or technical knockout, accounting for 57% of his career total (21). His list of UFC victims: Ronaldo Souza, Charlie Ontiveros, Joaquin Buckley and Anthony Hernandez. Holland tackles Alex Oliveira in a three-round welterweight feature.

46: Professional rounds completed by Oliveira as a mixed martial artist. He has gone the distance on 10 different occasions and carries a 5-4-1 record in those bouts.

8: Consecutive calendar years in which Sergey Spivak has fought at least once. He went 2-0 in 2014, 2-0 in 2015, 1-0 in 2016, 2-0 in 2017, 2-0 in 2018, 1-1 in 2019, 1-1 in 2020 and 2-1 in 2021. Spivak toes the line against Greg Hardy in a three-round heavyweight attraction.

50: Victories between the seven men—Maurice Greene, Yorgan De Castro, Juan Adams, Dmitry Smoliakov, Ray Jones, Tebaris Gordon and Austen Lane—Hardy has defeated.

24: Years of age for Maria Agapova. The youngest fighter on the card, she was born on April 7, 1997 in Pavlodar, Kazakhstan. Agapova faces former teammate Maryna Moroz in a three-round women’s flyweight prelim.

.753: Cumulative winning percentage between the 26 fighters scheduled to compete at the event. They sport a combined record of 417-131-6. Masvidal owns the most wins (35) and most losses (15) of anyone on the card. Advertisement
