By the Numbers: Carlos Diego Ferreira vs. Francisco Trinaldo

The ordering process for Ultimate Fighting Championship pay-per-views has changed: UFC 237 is only available on ESPN+ in the U.S.

Two tough Brazilians will collide in front of a divided home crowd at UFC 237 on May 11. One is a gritty and reliable veteran in Francisco Trinaldo and the other is a rising lightweight star in Carlos Diego Ferreira. Read about the numbers that make this match a true crowd-pleaser.

Wins by knockout

Trinaldo is a prolific kickboxer who did well as a pro, amassing a record of 12-1 before transitioning into mixed martial arts. The three-time Brasilia state national champion brought his standup smarts with him at a local promotion called Fight Club Tournament where he knocked out Vinicius Dohrer inside two rounds. It was the second fight of his professional career and his very first knockout. Throughout his career, Trinaldo has gathered eight victories by KO or TKO, four of which were in the Ultimate Fighthing Championship. His victims were Delson Heleno, Chad Laprise, Paul Felder and Evan Dunham.

The younger Ferreira has fewer knockout wins, but his fists have recently been on fire as three of his last five victories came by KO or TKO. He starched Ramsey Nijem and then Jared Gordon and Kyle Nelson. Prior to that, Ferreira had never won by knockout.

Wins by submission

Ferreira started his professional career on a roll, submitting five of his first six opponents. The Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt has so far tallied six submissions total. On the other end, Trinaldo may be known primarily for his striking but he does have a decent ground game. He is, after all, a Brazilin jiu-jitsu brown belt. “Massaranduba” owns five victories by tapout, two of which were in the UFC. These were against C.J. Keith and Mike Rio.

Striking accuracy in the UFC

It’s no surprise that Trinaldo is the more accurate striker of the two. In 18 Octagon appearances, Trinaldo landed 673 out of the 1,483 significant strikes he threw, making for a 45 percent striking accuracy. As far as Octagon competition goes, his UFC 237 opponent parades a 37 percent striking accuracy. Ferreira is an eight-fight Octagon veteran who landed 304 out of the 819 significant strikes he has attempted.

Takedown accuracy

Ferreira hasn’t been successful with his takedowns, scoring only one after 13 attempts, which translates to a 23 percent takedown accuracy. Trinaldo, on the other hand, has shown some good wrestling. He prides of a 46 percent takedown accuracy after completing 16 out of the 35 takedowns he attempted as a UFC standout.

Career losses

Trinaldo boasts an impressive record of 23-6. He was defeated inside the Octagon by James Vick, Kevin Lee, Michael Chiesa, Piotr Hallmann and Gleison Tibau. His lone setback outside of the UFC came at the hands of a future UFC standout in Iuri Alcantara. Ferreira, on the other hand, has lost only twice in 17 professional fights. These losses are both in the UFC and were dealt by Beneil Dairush and current interim lightweight champion Dustin Poirier.
