By the Numbers: Daniel Cormier vs. Stipe Miocic II

The ordering process for Ultimate Fighting Championship pay-per-views has changed: UFC 241 is only available on ESPN+ in the U.S.

It’s been a year since Daniel Cormier snatched the Ultimate Fighting Championship heavyweight title from Stipe Miocic. It ended with “DC” knocking out the heavy-handed Ohio native. On Aug. 17, the two heavyweights are set to run it back at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California, at UFC 241. Ahead of this monumental encounter, take a look at the significant numbers below.

UFC Championship experience

Cormier has fought for a UFC title a total of eight times. At UFC 182, he challenged Jon Jones for the light heavyweight championship and lost by unanimous decision. When Jones was stripped of the crown, Cormier contended for it against Anthony Johnson. Cormier won and successfully defended the belt against Alexander Gustafsson, Johnson in a rematch and Volkan Oezdemir. He also rematched Jones and lost, but the decision was overturned to a no contest following a failed drug test for the latter.

After beating Oezdemir, Cormier challenged Miocic for the heavyweight strap, winning by first-round knockout. He made a successful defense against Derrick Lewis before deciding to relinquish the light heavyweight belt to focus on defending the heavyweight championship.

Miocic, on the other hand, has appeared in a UFC championship bout five times. He won the heavyweight title via a first-round knockout of Fabricio Werdum at UFC 198. He successfully defended it against Alistair Overeem, Junior dos Santos and Francis Ngannou before losing it to Cormier at UFC 226.

Wins by knockout

Both Cormier and Miocic have power in their hands, but the latter is the more devastating one by far. Fourteen out of Miocic’s 18 wins have come via KO or TKO. His victims inside the Octagon are dos Santos, Overeem, Werdum, Andrei Arlovski, Mark Hunt, Fabio Maldonado, Shane del Rosario and Philip De Fries.

As for Cormier, 10 out of his 22 career victories have come via KO or TKO. Apart from Miocic, his most notable victims include Oezdemir and Antonio Silva.

Wins by submission

The more dynamic fighter of the two, Cormier has beaten five opponents by submission. These are Lewis, Johnson twice, Dan Henderson and Tony Johnson. Miocic, on the other hand, has yet to defeat anyone by submission.

Striking accuracy

After 13 UFC bouts, Cormier has landed 625 out of 1218 significant strikes, making for a 51 percent striking accuracy. His most in a single fight was 140 against Gustafsson. Miocic, on the other hand, holds a 52 percent striking accuracy, landing 720 out of the 1392 significant strikes he threw. His highest output was against Hunt at 113.

Takedown accuracy

Miocic and Cormier are both Division 1 wrestlers, but with some Olympic experience, the latter is expected to perform better. Cormier certainly did not disappoint in the UFC as he has scored 17 out of 45 takedown attempts, with makes for a 47 percent takedown accuracy. Miocic, meanwhile, owns a 38 percent takedown accuracy, having completed 24 out of 63 attempts.
